How long does a typical car conversion take?

A typical conversion usually takes between 3 to 5 days.

How much can you save with a conversion?

An average saving of between 25% - 40% can be achieved for LPG conversions compared to running on petrol.

Here's an example calculation for a car covering 24,000 miles per year on petrol:

  • 28 MPG
  • Petrol consumption: 857 gallons or 3,891 litres
  • £1.85 per litre = £7,198.35 cost of petrol per year

For the same car covering 24,000 miles per year on LPG:

  • 22 MPG (30% drop in economy)
  • 5,448 litres @ £0.95 per litre = £5,175.60

Petrol cost £7,198.35

LPG cost    £5,175.60

Total yearly saving £2,022.75

Pay back on conversion is normally less than 1 year with an average saving of between 25% - 40%.

PLEASE NOTE: Fuel prices subject to change. Example costs correct as of September 2022.

Where will the tank be fitted in a car conversion?

Where the tank is installed varies from vehicle to vehicle. It could be a cylinder tank in the boot, a toroidal (donut shaped) tank in the wheel well, sill tanks or an underbody tank alongside a smaller replacement petrol tank. We will advise you of the best option for your vehicle.

Where can you re-fuel?

LPG, CNG and Diesel Blend filling stations are readily available throughout the UK, as well as Europe, and new fill points are being added all the time. Visit our Fuelling Stations page to find out where your nearest filling station is located.

What is Liquefied Natural Gas?

LNG is natural gas that has been cooled down to liquid form. This process reduces the volume and makes it much easier and safer for storage and transport.

Is it safe to convert to CNG or LPG?

Yes, all our conversions are safe. Compared with petrol, CNG and LPG is much safer. The gas is stored under pressure as a liquid and the tanks are able to withstand far greater impacts than your petrol tank can without rupturing. The systems incorporate a shut-off valve that automatically cuts off the fuel supply if you are unfortunate enough to be involved in a collision.

What happens if I run out of gas?

The converted car is bi-fuel so you can still run on petrol if the gas runs out. Most systems will automatically switch to petrol should you run out of LPG or you may have to manually switch to petrol.

Is there additional maintenance required after a conversion?

All conversions come with a free of charge 1,000 mile check. We also recommend an annual service or 15,000 mile service, which our network of installers can complete for you.

Can you convert a boat to run on gas?

Boats can be converted at selected dealers. See our Installers page or contact us for your local installer.

Do I need an adapter at the pump when refuelling?

If you are refuelling in the UK, you do not need an adapter at the pump. However, if you are travelling in Europe, an adapter is needed as there are two different types of fuel nozzle. We do not provide the adaptors with the conversion kit but advise our customers that they are readily available on the internet and they should purchase one prior to travelling abroad. We do keep adaptors at our filling station in Winchester, just in case.

Will my car insurance still cover me?

Yes, but you should always check with your insurance company that they will insure a converted vehicle. The vast majority of insurance companies do, but as with all insurance policies, you will need to check the individual requirements and let them know of any changes to your vehicle.

Previously, LPG certificates were issued but these have been replaced by the UKLPG vehicle register, which all good insurance companies should already be aware of. Our installers will add your vehicle to this register as proof that the conversion has been completed by an approved conversion centre. Only approved conversion centres can add vehicles to the register.

How do I check if my car is compatible for a conversion?

You can either give us a call on 02380 446 467 with your car details to hand (ie make / model, year, engine size and, if possible, the number of cylinders) or you can check via our simple to use online vehicle checker:
