How safe is driving on LPG (autogas)?

Driving on LPG is safe and easy to do. Just like petrol, LPG vapour can ignite, but unlike petrol, LPG is stored in the vehicle in a strong, steel tank and has a number of safety valves.

Independent tests by the TNO in Holland concluded that LPG vehicles were safer in an accident than petrol powered vehicles. In fire service tests in the UK it was demonstrated that, in the event of a serious fire, occupants in a vehicle have three times longer to evacuate with LPG than petrol.

Most petrol engines can be converted by the addition of a second fuel system - LPG. This means that the vehicle will continue to run on petrol (for instance if you run out of LPG) and the LPG tank can be fitted in the spare wheel well or in some cases below the vehicle so you do not lose any boot space. The fuel tanks are 20 times more puncture resistant, and can withstand far more pressure than typical fuel tanks.

Autogas meets the same standards for safety as conventionally fuelled vehicles

Refuelling with autogas is as safe and simple as filling up with petrol or diesel. Vehicles of all types, from cars to HGVs, coaches to boats, can all run safely on autogas. Here we explore some of the benefits of converting to autogas.

Autogas requires a much higher temperature to ignite compared to petrol and diesel.
Components are thoroughly tested by independent labs prior to entering the market.
Autogas has the lowest flammability range of any fossil fuel.
Unlike petrol and diesel, if autogas leaks it does not pool or puddle, but instead vaporises and dissipates into the air.
Since autogas is released as a vapour, it can’t be ingested like petrol or diesel.

In its natural state, autogas is virtually odourless and colourless. The unpleasant smell you might associate with propane is added to autogas to help with detection in case of a leak.

Driving on Liquid Petroleum Gas instead of CNG

In the last few years, OEM CNG passenger cars have been sold in several countries, and driving on natural gas was often stimulated by governmental regulations. As the price for Compressed Natural Gas increased (up to €4 per kilogram in some countries, x4 times as much as before), there is an even more increasing demand for LPG conversion.

The fuel system, developed by Prins Autogassystemen, is specially designed for LPG. The LPG system can be installed additionally to the original CNG system. Actually, converting a CNG car is quite similar to a conversion of a petrol car; so the car can still run on the original fuel (CNG). As the 'extra' LPG system is installed in the car, the car is also suitable for running on autogas or CNG. With the Prins VSI-3 DI LPG system, the driver can now also choose to drive on Liquefied Petroleum Gas instead of the more expensive CNG fuel. Resulting in even greater savings on fuel costs.
